They paid for the content precisely because they didn’t want to spend hundreds of hours doing world building. If the response to WotC’s moves is an attitude of “homebrew your own!” Then a lot of DMs feel like they got robbed. I get the sense that some of this is going on here. I was proposing a series of skill challenges beyond a simple survival check to navigate the wilderness, and some commentators said they resented the fact that they had to invent a new mechanic because WotC neglected to. I saw this sentiment when talking about exploration and making rangers feel meaningful in a wilderness setting. A lot of DMs resent the fact that a lot of 5e feels “incomplete” to them and that despite shelling out cash for source books, there are still big gaps that DMs have to fill to run the game.
